European Union leaders ended their Brussels summit on Thursday without a deal on the bloc's next seven-year budget, and even dropped the hard year-end deadline from their joint statement. Ireland's €1.62 trillion compromise, an 8% cut to the European Commission's plan, has been rejected by Germany and its fellow "frugal" net contributors as too big, by southern and eastern states as too small, and by the European Parliament as a non-starter.With elections due in France, Italy and Poland in 2027, the clock is ticking.
