King Harald V of Norway died in Oslo on Friday, August 28, at the age of 89, after 35 years on the throne. Under Norway's constitution the succession is automatic, so his son is now King Haakon VIII, and Haakon's wife of 25 years, Mette-Marit, becomes queen.She arrives on the throne at the worst moment of her public life. In January, a fresh release of the US Justice Department's Epstein files showed her exchanging friendly emails with Jeffrey Epstein years after his 2008 sex offence conviction.
In June, her eldest son Marius Borg Hoiby was convicted of two counts of rape and sentenced to four years. Days earlier, she had undergone a lung transplant for a chronic lung disease
diagnosed in 2018.
