(EN/FR) Olympic Truce Endorsed by UN General Assembly for Paris 2024 | UNGA 78 | United Nations
Today (21 Nov), the General Assembly adopted the Olympic Truce resolution for the Olympic and Paralympic Games of Paris 2024.The draft resolution A/78/L.9 “Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal” was adopted by recorded vote (118 in favor -0 against- 2 abstentions).
After the vote, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, Thomas Bach, and the Paris 2024 President, Tony Estanguet, addressed the media.
Thomas Bach said, “We warmly welcome and are very grateful for the overwhelming support of this Olympic Truce resolution by just two abstentions.”
Tony Estanguet said, “Our satisfaction…We want to really thank the states that have publicly expressed their support for the Games, the importance of the Games, and their role in society today. I think this is the most important for us: to feel that a vast majority of countries today want to engage in the Games' success and in the development of the Olympic and Paralympic Games for humanity.”
The IOC President also said, “We had hardly any time after World War Two, with so much confrontation, conflict, and wars that in such a time, this mission of the Olympic movement, of the Olympic Games is even more important than ever, and therefore, you know, we are really overwhelmed by the support expressed by the UN General Assembly.”
Dating back to the ancient Olympic Games in Olympia in 776 BC, the Olympic Truce aims to halt all hostilities, allowing the safe passage and participation of athletes and spectators for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The IOC revived the Olympic Truce in 1992, and is now introduced for every edition of the Games.
The draft resolution for the Olympic Truce for Paris 2024 was formally submitted to the Member States by the Government of France in close collaboration with the IOC, the International Paralympic Committee, and the Organising Committee. Receive SMS online on sms24.me
