Nella giornata del 26 febbraio, Călin #Georgescu è stato fermato e portato in procura mentre, riporta il suo team sui social, andava a ricandidarsi alle nuove elezioni. La Corte Costituzionale rumena aveva infatti annullato, il 6 dicembre, le elezioni nazionali per sospette "ingerenze russe" a favore di Georgescu, che aveva vinto al primo turno. L'arresto è avvenuto nell’ambito di un’indagine su presunti finanziamenti illeciti alla sua campagna elettorale. Il procedimento penale a suo carico lo accusa di "creazione di organizzazioni fasciste e razziste". Georgescu è stato interrogato per almeno quattro ore. Fuori dall'edificio ha cominciato a radunarsi una grande folla, che lo ha atteso fino alla sua ricomparsa.
"Questo mi ricorda la mentalità e il sistema comunista degli anni '50. Non c'è differenza", dice Georgescu ai giornalisti lì presenti.
"Noi siamo la #Romania, noi siamo il potere, noi siamo questo Paese e questo Paese non si inginocchierà davanti a nessuno. Se me l'aspettavo? Sì, c'era da aspettarselo, perché quello che ci riservano dal 6 dicembre è tanto. Possiamo dire che tutto sommato, il 6 dicembre ci hanno fatto un grande favore. La corruzione è stata messa in bella mostra. L'umanità intera, il genere umano, sa cosa sta succedendo in Romania con questo sistema e non posso che accogliere con favore la loro iniziativa della disperazione in combutta con Bruxelles".
Georgescu ha poi fatto a riferimento a Donald Trump, sostenendo che "tutta questa enorme corruzione a livello mondiale sarà smascherata" proprio dalla nuova amministrazione USA.
