Have you ever been somewhere incredible, tried everything you could think of, and still couldn’t find a photo you were happy with?

I’ve been there too, and it led to the #1 mistake I made early on.

I used to believe that if a location was incredible, there had to be a great photo there somewhere... and if I couldn’t find it, I had failed.

But an amazing location doesn’t always translate into a great photograph.

In this video, I’ll take you along on a trip to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, where I drove eight to nine hours and came up empty on that first day.

Then I’ll show you what to do when you’re standing in front of a scene and it just isn’t working.

It starts with one simple question... what am I trying to create?

There are three possible answers, and knowing which one applies changes what you do next.

Sometimes there’s an image worth creating, and you work the scene with purpose, like I did in the Adirondack Mountains, where I created 151 images and kept only 8.

Sometimes documenting the moment is enough, and the photo is simply a memory of where you were and who you were with.

And sometimes it’s okay to put the camera down and enjoy where you are.

Whether you’re working through photography for beginners lessons or you’ve been at it for years, this mindset shift takes a lot of pressure off every time you pick up your camera.

And if you’re starting to learn photography after 50, it can save you years of frustration and forced photos you’re not proud of.
