Inoue Dosa Inseki vs. Honinbo DotekiHoninbō Dōteki (本因坊 道的, 1669 – June 13, 1690) was an Edo-period Go player, born in Matsusaka, Ise Province. Originally named Ogawa, he was the heir to Honinbō Dōsaku. He achieved the rank of 6-dan at the age of 13, gaining recognition as one of the greatest prodigies in the history of the game. In 1685, after defeating Yasui Shunchi with White and no komi in a Castle Game, the Magistrate of Temples and Shrines ordered Dōteki to advance to the rank of 7-dan. Such direct involvement of the authorities in rank determination was highly unusual, signifying Dōteki's remarkable skill and recognition within the Go community.
Inoue Dōsa Inseki (井上道砂因碩, 1649–1697) was a prominent Go player during the Edo period and the third head of the Inoue house. He hailed from Iwami Province (modern-day Ōda, Shimane Prefecture) and was a disciple of Honinbō Dōetsu. His rank was Jōzu (7-dan).
Dōsa was the younger brother of Honinbō Dōsaku, though some records suggest he was Dōsaku's nephew. His birth name was Yamazaki Chiyomatsu, and after retirement, he adopted the name Kyūzan. The Inoue house’s family records and writings such as Hon'inbō Kaden by Ishii Jokin also refer to him as Dōsaku's nephew.
Following the death of the second head, Inoue Genkaku Inseki, in 1673 without naming a successor, Honinbō Dōetsu recommended Dōsa as the next head of the Inoue house to the Jisha Bugyō (Commissioner of Temples and Shrines). This proposal was approved, and Dōsa formally took the name Inoue Inseki in 1674, establishing a tradition where all Inoue heads adopted the title "Inseki." Although the Inoue family’s stipend of 50 koku and 10 retainers was temporarily reduced to 25 koku during this transition, it was eventually restored.
