This is the extraordinary Bhawal Sanyasi Case — one of the most fascinating identity disputes in Indian legal history.
In 1909, Ramendra Narayan Roy, the second Kumar of the Bhawal estate, was reported dead in Darjeeling. A body was cremated the following day.
But for years, rumours continued that the prince was actually alive.
Then, around 1920–21, a mysterious sanyasi appeared in Dhaka. He had long matted hair, a long beard and his body was covered in ash.
Soon, people began whispering:
“Is this actually the missing Bhawal prince?”
The mystery eventually became a massive legal battle.
Was he really Ramendra Narayan Roy?
Or was he an impostor trying to claim the royal estate?
Witnesses were questioned. Physical marks were examined. Memories and family details were debated. The case eventually went through the Calcutta High Court and all the way to the Privy Council in London.
After decades of controversy, the Privy Council dismissed the final appeal in 1946.
But the story had one final twist.
