How do you pitch a movie?
Making a movie is hard. Getting to make one is harder. Learning how to pitch a
movie is a skill almost entirely separate from filmmaking itself — a movie pitch
meeting is a few minutes, one room, and an idea that has to survive contact with the
person who controls the money.
This video collects what working filmmakers actually say about it. Jordan Peele on
scaling Get Out to a budget that could get approved. Neill Blomkamp on why less
money bought him more creative freedom. Guillermo del Toro on the one rule he
swears by. Greta Gerwig on Lady Bird. Damien Chazelle on shooting the Whiplash
short as proof he could direct. The Wachowskis storyboarding The Matrix because
nobody could picture it. And Arnold Schwarzenegger on the painting James

The pattern underneath all of it: you are not only pitching a story. You are pitching
yourself, and an audience, and the evidence that you can pull it off. Concept art, a
proof of concept short film, a full set of storyboards — every strong film pitch carries
evidence, because an idea on the page is invisible until a filmmaker makes it visible.
If you're working out how to pitch a film of your own, the useful takeaway isn't a
formula. It's that almost nobody is naturally good at this, including the directors you
admire — and that the pitches that work are the ones where the filmmaker got
actually excited in the room.
