It is well known that the existence of cabover trucks is largely due to the harsh transport regulations experienced from the 1940s onward. Because of these same regulations, many brands focused on developing increasingly compact and lightweight trucks that allowed for high payload capacity margins. One of these companies was GMC, which, drawing on the experience from its Cannonball model, launched its F-series.
These trucks were designed to feature an ultra-lightweight chassis, formed by steel I-beams, as well as a compact and light cab using riveted aluminum and fiberglass—the latter being responsible for its nickname, "Crackerbox," due to its resemblance to saltine cracker boxes. Although these vehicles are not so widely remembered today, they were models tailored to the needs of the era, representing an effective and advanced solution for the conditions of that time.
