VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
In 2022, Elon Musk said something in front of the world that sounded completely insane. He said — "Population collapse is a far bigger threat to civilisation than climate change." Now when people heard this, they were shocked. Because this is the same man who once said he wanted to build electric cars. People called him crazy until he built the most valuable car company on Earth. Then he said he wanted to make rockets. People called him crazy until he turned it into a trillion-dollar miracle. So when this same man — Elon Musk — said that POPULATION COLLAPSE is a bigger threat to humanity than climate change, the world wasn't laughing this time. They were curious and anxious at the same time.
Now look at this single number that is quietly breaking the world. It's called the Total Fertility Rate — the average number of children a woman has in her lifetime. The rule is brutally simple. If that number is 2.1 or above, a country's population grows or stays stable. If it falls below 2.1, the population is mathematically GUARANTEED to shrink. For India, this was never supposed to be a problem. In 1960, we stood at a TFR of 6 — every Indian woman had on average 6 children. But then the number started dropping. And in 2026, for the first time in Indian history, India's TFR has crashed to 1.9. We are now below the danger line.
When I first saw this, my reaction was — this is GREAT news. Think about it. We have 200 million people living in poverty. The government hands out subsidised food to 800 million people. We don't have enough hospitals. We don't have enough schools. So if the population drops, everything should get better, right? Less people, less poverty, more resources for everyone, a European-style life. But then I read Elon's tweet again and something didn't add up. So I pulled a thread of research papers, documents, case studies, and a shit ton of numbers. And what I found will shock you — India's population collapse is going to change this country more than any politician, any election, any pandemic, and any war ever has. So in this case study, I want to answer three questions that nobody in Indian media is asking. Why is the richest man on Earth losing sleep over India's population? How does the most crowded country in human history suddenly end up running out of babies? And most importantly, what does this mean for every Indian — your job, your savings, your old age?
