Dalam rekaman audio yang disiarkan saat Hamas menembakkan ribuan roket pada 7 Oktober, Deif menyebut serangan itu sebagai "Banjir Al-Aqsa," yang mengisyaratkan serangan itu merupakan balasan atas serangan Israel di Masjid Al-Aqsa di Yerusalem.
Seorang sumber yang dekat dengan Hamas mengatakan Deif mulai merencanakan operasi itu pada Mei 2021, setelah serangan di situs tersuci ketiga umat Islam.
Berdasarkan laporan Al Arabiya, Deif setidaknya telah selamat dari tujuh upaya pembunuhan Israel.

Deif mengembangkan jaringan terowongan dan keahlian pembuatan bom kelompok tersebut.
Ia telah menduduki puncak daftar orang paling dicari Israel selama beberapa dekade.
Angkatan udara Israel mengatakan pihaknya menyerang 40 target di Jalur Gaza pada hari Selasa.
Sedikitnya tiga roket ditembakkan ke arah kota Sderot Israel oleh pejuang Jihad Islam Palestina.
Angkatan udara Israel menjatuhkan delapan bom seberat 2.000 pon dalam serangannya di wilayah al-Mawasi di Gaza pada hari Sabtu (13/7/2024) dalam upaya untuk membunuh Mohammed Deif.
Namun Deif, menurut seorang pejabat Hamas, dilaporkan selamat dan masih hidup hingga kini sambil mengawasi operasi kelompok itu.
Lembaga pemikir pertahanan yang berbasis di AS, Institute for the Study of War (ISW) dan Critical Threats Project pada Rabu (17/7/2024) juga mengatakan bahwa militer Israel masih belum secara resmi mengonfirmasi bahwa mereka telah membunuh Deif.(*)
