Japan: Hundreds of Firefighters Battle Raging Wildfires
Multiple wildfires have broken out across northern Japan, with forest fires sweeping through the mountainous areas of the Iwate region. Thick columns of smoke have been seen rising from the valley as flames spread dangerously close to residential areas. In Otsuchi, a town of around 10,000 people, the blaze has reached near homes, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 3,200 residents. Officials said the fires have already burned about 1,730 acres of land since April 22 and destroyed several buildings. Hundreds of firefighters are on the ground battling the fast-moving flames, while helicopters continue water-dropping operations to contain the fires.---
