In New York findet die erste Anhörung von Nicolás Maduro und seiner Ehefrau statt. Im Gerichtssaal gibt sich der 63-Jährige kämpferisch, plädiert auf unschuldig – und macht klar, dass er sich weiter als Präsident Venezuelas sieht.

Um kurz nach zwölf werden Nicolás Maduro und seine Frau am Montagmittag in den Gerichtssaal geführt, ohne Handschellen, begleitet von US-Marshalls. Auf Englisch sagt er „Happy New Year“, sucht den Blickkontakt mit Journalisten, die hinten im Saal sitzen.

Es ist der erste öffentliche Auftritt, seit US-Kräfte das Ehepaar am Wochenende bei einem dramatischen Militäreinsatz in Caracas gefasst haben.
