Dopo la #crisifinanziaria del 2008, la produzione industriale italiana ha registrato un forte calo senza riuscire a recuperare pienamente i livelli precedenti, a differenza di altri Paesi europei. Tra le cause possiamo individuare l'alto costo dell'energia, l'incertezza normativa, la discontinuità degli incentivi pubblici, le difficoltà di accesso al credito e la scarsa capitalizzazione di molte imprese.
Molte aziende, soprattutto piccole e medie, si trovano in condizioni finanziarie tali da rendere difficile la competizione internazionale. In questo scenario, l'acquisizione da parte di gruppi esteri diventa spesso l'unica via percorribile.
