Classical Music | Seasons of Life
Join us for this new and exciting musical selection, taking us through each of the stages of life: childhood, youth, middle age, and old age.
Childhood’s tenderness, the excitement of play, after a first, loving opening, the imagination runs wild in this first section, from the Hall of the Mountain King to Dukas’ Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
Youth opens with the cheerful beauty of Morning Mood from Grieg’s Peer Gynt and Beethoven’s No. 6 “Pastoral” Symphony, to then fall, head over heels, into love’s embrace. Allow yourself to be swept away by the romance of Tchaikovsky, Elgar, and Rachmaninoff.
This is followed by a more meditative turn, with “Barcarolle” and the Canzonetta from Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, the excitement and hubbub of Gershwin’s magnificent Rhapsody in Blue.
A brooding nostalgia begins the final section, old age, with Rachmaninoff’s heartbreaking, transporting Bells of Moscow. But we are rescued, in extremis, by the uplifting power, the joy discovered against all odds, of Beethoven’s 7th symphony.
