We trust numbers because they sound objective and scientific. But what if numbers are better at lying than words? This talk explores three ways statistics deceive justice: bad assumptions hidden behind good math, DNA evidence that sounds certain but isn't, and algorithms that launder bias into objectivity. Through the story of Sally Clark—imprisoned because of a flawed statistic—we'll see how precision can masquerade as truth. Because while statistics can guide justice, they should never replace human judgment. She is a criminal psychologist and former prosecutor whose work focuses on the intersection of law and human behavior. Drawing on courtroom experience, she examines the psychological dimensions of criminal responsibility, decision-making, and offender behavior. She is particularly interested in how psychological insights can strengthen legal practice and advance the pursuit of justice.
