We look at early cases of industrial poisoning, the rise of leaded petrol, the role of companies such as General Motors and the Ethyl Corporation, and the scientific debate surrounding its safety. We also discuss researchers such as Robert Kehoe, who argued that lead exposure could be controlled, and Clair Patterson, whose measurements revealed that human activity had dramatically increased environmental lead contamination.
The effects of lead exposure can be especially serious in children, affecting the brain, nervous system, learning ability and development. Over time, stronger scientific evidence connected widespread lead exposure with serious health and environmental consequences. These findings eventually pushed governments across the world to reduce and phase out leaded petrol, making it one of the most important environmental health policy changes in modern history.
