One of the Most Jacked Players in Pistons History

March 22, 1989 - Jim Rowinski, for those scoring at home, stood at 6-foot-8 and weighed 260 pounds. Appearing WWF-ready, Rowinski had just six percent body fat and could bench-press 420 pounds, according to Cameron Stauth in The Franchise.

Stauth's account (p. 162):

"At the mention of Rowinski, James Edwards went, 'Arrrgghh!' Rowinski brightened; the growl was his trademark. It signified that Rowinski was an animal, the strongest guy on the team. He had a Schwarzenegger body and could bench-press 420 pounds. He much preferred 'Arrrgghh' to 'Jim-Bob' but he wasn't bitching either way. He was just glad to be in the NBA instead of Topeka, Kansas, where he'd been playing his ass off in the CBA to catch somebody's attention."

Rowinski appeared in just six games with the Pistons before John Salley's return from injury induced his release. He went on to play 23 games on the NBA level altogether, peaking with a 14-game stint with the expansion Heat in 1990.

Rowinski's mere appearance at the NBA level stood as a bit of a miracle. Per a Sports Illustrated story during his time at Perdue in 1984, Rowinski wasn't even six feet tall prior to his senior year of high school:

"Hold it. That's 6'8" and 243 pounds, with a 46-inch chest, 18-inch biceps and musculature reminiscent of the Sears Tower. In getting as big as he is, Rowinski completed an improbable before-and-after saga that includes not only his gaining 10 inches and almost 80 pounds since he was a high school junior, but also a remarkable transformation from a noncontributing reserve sluggo who shot barely 35% from the free-throw line as a college junior. That was last year. Now, Purdue coach Gene Keady calls Rowinski Mr. Beach; his teammates call him Steroid—only joking, Mr. Samaranch—and many observers, noting his 15.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in a balanced, deliberate attack, are ready to proclaim him the Big Ten MVP."
