Motivated to achieve very high-speed trains operating over existing railroad tracks, the New York Central Railroad was the driver of one of the most extravagant yet unique ideas in the world: they created a self-propelled railcar powered by turbojet engines from a military bomber.
Although their intention was mostly investigative, and in its results this was proven by its lack of practicality, what resulted from these experiments was more than a fun anecdote; it was a clear demonstration of how far ingenuity, and a few thousand dollars, can go to prove a single idea.
