LIVE: At Least 16 Killed in Terror Attack on Australia's Bondi Beach | Vantage with Palki Sharma
At least 16 people have been killed in a shooting incident on Sydney's Bondi Beach. A large crowd, mainly comprising Jewish people, were shot while they were celebrating the first day of Hanukkah. At least 40 people were injured and hospitalised. Australian PM Anthony Albanese called it an "evil act of antisemitism, terrorism". The perpetrators have been identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed. While the two attackers were shooting at the unarmed victims, a man crept over the shooter's shoulder and snatched his gun. Police shot down both the shooters. Naveed was named in a case where he was found associated with others blamed for spreading hatred. PM Albanese called it a terror incident. “What we saw yesterday was an act of pure evil, an act of terror, an act of anti-Semitism, an attack on the first day of Hanukkah, targeted at the Jewish community, a dark day in Australia's history on what should have been a day of light," he said. He proposed more gun-control laws to mitigate the chances of further such instances. Australia is witnessing a rise in anti-semitic cases as jews face threats from neo-Nazis, far-left and Islamists. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he had warned PM Albanese about the possibility of anti-semitic activities in the continent, owing to certain policies of the latter.
