In un discorso pronunciato ieri, 9 gennaio, davanti al Corpo Diplomatico accreditato presso la Santa Sede, Papa Leone XIV ha lanciato un allarme sulla crescente erosione della libertà di espressione, particolarmente nel mondo occidentale. Le sue parole, pronunciate in un contesto di tensioni globali, hanno suscitato ampio dibattito per la loro franchezza e attualità. Il Pontefice ha dichiarato: "È doloroso vedere come, soprattutto in Occidente, lo spazio per una genuina libertà di espressione si stia rapidamente restringendo. Allo stesso tempo, si sta sviluppando un nuovo linguaggio in stile orwelliano che, nel tentativo di essere sempre più inclusivo, finisce per escludere coloro che non si conformano alle ideologie che lo alimentano".
