Syrian government and SDF agree on immediate ceasefire: State media
Syrian state media has announced an immediate ceasefire between the government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which includes the handover of territory and natural resources by the SDF.President Ahmed al-Sharaa also announced that the Syrian army will enter the three eastern and northeastern provinces. These regions were under SDF control until just days ago.
Sharaa stated that his scheduled meeting with the SDF leader, Mazloum Abdi, has been postponed until Monday.
The agreement follows a lightning advance by Syrian government forces, who captured the strategic town of Tabqa from the SDF while pushing towards the key northern city of Raqqa.
Heavy clashes are reported in areas east of Deir Az Zor. The military says its forces have full control of Deir Hafer, have captured the Jarrah airbase to the east, and are clearing landmines.
The government is extending its grip on Kurdish-run areas after President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree declaring Kurdish a "national language" and granting the minority official recognition.
Separately, Syria’s army says four of its soldiers have been killed in attacks by Kurdish fighters. The SDF acknowledges some of its troops died in battle but has not provided a number.
For the latest developments, we are following reports from several key locations. Al Jazeera’s Ayman Oghanna is reporting live from the Syrian capital, Damascus.
From the critical northern city of Aleppo, where the Syrian army's advances have been most pronounced, Zein Basravi is on the ground. And joining the analysis here is our correspondent Ali Hashem.
We are also joined by two experts for their perspective: Gamal Mansour, a Syria analyst and lecturer in Political Science at the University of Toronto, and Kamaran Palani, a Kurdish Principal Investigator for PeaceRep Iraq.
