The US has imposed new sanctions on Rwanda. Washington accuses Kigali of sending its soldiers into the Eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to conduct operations alongside the M23 rebel group. Rwanda is also accused of giving the M23 rebels surface-to-air missiles. The US has also sanctioned a Rwandan financial institute called the Zigama Credit and Savings Society. Washington says that Zigama has been enabling the smuggling of gold from M23-held territory into Rwanda. Firstpost looks at the situation on the ground in the Eastern DR Congo.
