A country where the forests start where the city ends, where there are more than two thousand islands, and where the Baltic is never more than a few minutes away. Half the land is woodland. Estonians have a word for themselves, metsarahvas, the forest people, and they do not mean it as a metaphor.Tallinn in July barely gets dark. The light softens around eleven and simply stays. Nobody goes home. Conversations run long because the evening never officially ends.
The Old Town has looked more or less the same for eight hundred years. Cobbled streets, medieval walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that nobody treats like a museum. And down by the water sits Kultuurikatel, a grand old power station given a magnificent second life as one of the most striking creative spaces in Northern Europe. That is very Estonian. Keep the bones, change the purpose, make it better than it was.
Every few years the whole country gathers to sing together, tens of thousands of voices in one place, a tradition UNESCO counts among the world's great cultural treasures.
Then there are the people, who will tell you plainly that they are reserved, and then quietly make sure you have everything you need. Estonia hosted us for years, through more summers than anywhere else in the world, and never once made it feel like a favour.
Thank you, Estonia. For the long light, the forests, the sea, and the welcome.
