Can you spot the mistake!?

This video is about Bach’s beautiful chorale, 'Erstanden its Der heilge Christ’. It is just one among more than 400 chorales that Bach harmonised in his regular work as music director of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig from 1723 until his death in 1750. Bach’s chorale harmonisations are little miracles in which harmony (the sounding together of notes) and counterpoint (the interdependent movement of separate lines) are in perfect balance. Bach, probably more than any other musician, found a way to synthesise the horizontal and vertical elements in his music. However, this chorale contains a mistake; a rare case of parallel octaves. This animated video looks at the chorale in some detail and tries to explain what the mistake may tell us.
