De la révolution iranienne à l’invasion russe de l’Afghanistan, retour sur les événements de l’année 1979, moment de bascule géopolitique au Moyen-Orient, qui précipita la montée des islamismes.Deuxième volet : dans la seconde moitié de l'année 1979, les crises politiques au Moyen-Orient s’aggravent.

En Iran, les révolutionnaires de gauche, anciens alliés de circonstance de Khomeyni, sont de plus en plus marginalisés par sa théocratie autoritaire, incompatible avec leur vision d'un pays libre. En Égypte, alliée de l’Occident, les Frères musulmans voient leur influence grandir. En novembre, la prise d'otages à l'ambassade américaine de Téhéran provoque un choc mondial, et contribue à rallier des millions de musulmans à l’islamisme radical, tandis que l’occupation de la Grande Mosquée de La Mecque par un groupe de fondamentalistes secoue le monde musulman et déstabilise le régime wahhabite. L'année 1979 s’achève sur un nouveau chamboulement : l'invasion de l'Afghanistan par l’URSS, qui attisera les tensions géopolitiques dans la région et influencera durablement les rapports de force mondiaux.
