Nikola Tesla - The visionary who invented our future | DW Documentary

Nikola Tesla, born in 1856 in what is now Croatia, was one of the world’s greatest inventors. He developed numerous innovations in the field of electrical engineering and was granted over 280 patents, many of them in the USA.

Nikola Tesla arrived in New York in 1884 with barely a cent to his name. He worked briefly for Thomas Alva Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. However, their collaboration soon ended in a dispute. In the years that followed, Tesla developed groundbreaking technologies and implemented alternating current systems for the Westinghouse company. These shaped modern electrification.
For decades, Tesla conducted research into high-frequency alternating currents and the vision of wireless power transmission - a concept that was far ahead of its time. He also recognized early on that solar energy would become one of the most important sources of energy in the future. However, his visionary inventions were not fully realized during his lifetime.
Tesla’s life was marked by extremes: periods of abject poverty and professional setbacks alternated with an eccentric lifestyle that’s been heavily mythologized. In 1943, he died alone and destitute in a New York hotel.
