Ray Williams Scores 52 Points vs. Pistons (1982)

April 17, 1982 - Tying a Nets franchise record set by Mike Newlin just two seasons prior, 6-foot-3 Ray Williams finished with 52 points in a 147-132 win over the Detroit Pistons. Williams, who connected on 18 of his first 24 shots from the field, finished 21-of-34 all told, chipping in seven assists for good measure.

After scoring 43 points through three quarters, Williams was stuck on 47 with just 15 seconds left in the fourth. Then, after two free throws gave him 49, a last second 3-point buzzer beater pushed him over the 50-point threshold, tying him with Newlin for franchise superiority (a record that'd take 30 years to eclipse, by Deron Williams' 57-spot in 2012).

On account of the 3-point shot being in just it's third season, play-by-play voice Steve Albert can be heard misidentifying Williams' final shot as giving him only 51. The recorded broadcast then cuts out prematurely, curtailing the celebration. As an aside, Phil Jackson served as color commentary for this matchup.

Williams' performance likely served as the peak of his career, wrapping up a season in which he averaged 20.4 points per game and finished 16th in MVP voting, closing out a three year stretch in which he averaged 20 points and 6 assists, splitting time with the Nets and Knicks.

By the mid-80s, Williams—who played college ball alongside Kevin McHale, Mychal Thompson, and Flip Saunders at Minnesotia—shifted into full time role player status, bouncing around between Boston, Atlanta, and San Antonio before returning to New Jersey to finish out his career.

Post-retirement, Williams struggled financially, filing for bankruptcy in 1994 before later falling for a real estate scam, ultimately resulting in Williams becoming homeless, as reported by the Boston Globe in 2010. Shortly after the story's publication, the mayor of his hometown (Mount Vernon) as well as multiple former teammates reached out in an effort to get Williams back on his feet.

Taking on a job in his hometown with the recreation department, Williams went on to marry nurse Linda Crawford in 2011. Two years later, Williams passed away at age 58 from colon cancer.
