VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
People in October 1965. India was facing a crisis.
We had just fought a war with Pakistan, and the Prime Minister of India made a request to the nation that no Prime Minister should ever have to make.
Lal Bahadur Shastri asked every Indian to give up one meal a week. His exact words were "Sacrifice one meal at least a week!"
Why??
Because India simply did not have enough food. By 1966, an average of three American ships a day were docking at Indian ports with grain, and Economists called India a "ship-to-mouth" economy.
61 years later, Dr Jaishankar is warning us about a major food crisis!!
Now, the moment this clip went viral, a lot of people thought India is going to run out of food?
But you know what?? India today is sitting on so much rice that a Chief Minister is begging the Centre to take it away because there's no space left to store it.
So the question is, how can a country drowning in grain be staring at a food crisis?
Well, Jaishankar’s warning does not start in a godown. It starts in a 45 kilo bag, on a ship and in a 39 kilometre wide strip of water between Iran and Oman.
And at the very end of this video, I'll tell you about one sentence uttered by Indira Gandhi in 1966, after a phone call with the President of the United States. That one sentence tells you the future of India!!
So in this video, let's answer three questions:
What exactly did Dr Jaishankar say, and why is a foreign minister talking about food?
How will the Indian economy be affected due to the 4F problem?
And is India actually heading into a food crisis?
