Il blocco è stato causato da mezzi pesanti che, nonostante le forti nevicate, hanno tentato dei sorpassi. In questo inverno avaro di neve, stamattina (9 gennaio) molte zone dell'Alto Adige si sono risvegliate sotto una coltre bianca. Fiocchi di neve sono caduti anche a Bolzano. Nel capoluogo altoatesino non si è trattato di neve vera e propria, ma della cosiddetta neve tonda, chiamata anche gragnola (graupel in tedesco). Si tratta di una precipitazione solida formata da piccoli granelli di ghiaccio bianchi, simili a palline di neve. Nel frattempo, il versante austriaco dell'autostrada del Brennero A22 è rimasto completamente chiuso al traffico per circa 45 minuti, nel tratto compreso tra Innsbruck Sud e Patsch. Il blocco è stato causato da mezzi pesanti che, nonostante le forti nevicate, hanno tentato dei sorpassi rimanendo a loro volta bloccati sulla carreggiata innevata. Secondo quanto riferito da un portavoce della società delle autostrade austriache Asfinag all'agenzia Apa, i veicoli sono stati successivamente rimossi dai mezzi di soccorso, permettendo la riapertura dell'arteria. La viabilità ora è in lenta ripresa e le lunghe code (circa cinque chilometri in direzione del confine) si stanno smaltendo.
