The White House was placed under lockdown after reports of an exchange of gunfire near the complex in Washington, DC.According to reports from the scene, multiple shots were heard outside the White House grounds, prompting a major response from the Secret Service, US Park Police, Metro Police and National Guard units.
Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reported hearing that the US President was inside the Oval Office at the time of the incident, though officials had not immediately confirmed his condition or provided details about the shooting.
Authorities established a heavy security perimeter around the White House as investigations continued into what triggered the reported exchange of fire.
