Former special counsel Jack Smith defended his past investigations into President Trump during a contentious four-hour Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday. During GOP questioning, Smith rejected accusations of partisan weaponization and maintained that his team followed proper Department of Justice procedures. The hearing's most dramatic moment quickly turned into a gaffe when Sen. Eric Schmitt leveled a perjury accusation against Smith, claiming the prosecutor had secretly met with Atlanta District Attorney Fani Willis at an Atlanta Hawks basketball game. However, Schmitt's alleged "smoking gun" collapsed when it was revealed he confused the NBA's Atlanta Hawks with the college football team the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.Sen. Amy Klobuchar stepped in and said Smith deserved an apology after the mix-up.
“I would just say for a US senator to have false information and imply based on a confusion about the name of a team, which I knew, knowing my Midwestern sports, and imply that you were in another city, that you were somehow involved that day in what was happening in Georgia and then call you a dirtbag is something that deserves an apology,” Klobuchar said.
