Примерно в 1 000 километров от побережья Португалии скрыта одна из величайших и самых недооцененных геологических загадок Земли — котловина Кингс-Троу. Этот гигантский подводный каньон протянулся на невероятные 500 километров по дну Атлантики и полностью затмевает Гранд-Каньон, но миллионы лет оставался почти незамеченным в кромешной глубинной тьме. Десятилетиями ученые не могли понять, какие чудовищные силы могли разорвать океанское дно в таких масштабах, пока новое прорывное открытие наконец не раскрыло тайну. Исследователи только что выяснили: перегретый пузырь мантии медленно раскалял и ослаблял океаническую кору снизу, идеально подготовив породу к тому, чтобы она резко раскололась, когда движущиеся тектонические плиты начали растягивать этот участок, словно гигантскую молнию. И что еще невероятнее, точно такой же процесс, способный перекраивать планету, прямо сейчас активно разрывает новый участок дна Атлантического океана.Анимация создана для Adme.
