Israel’s West Bank move means ‘more threats, intimidation from Israeli settlers’: Analysis
The Israeli government has taken another step towards annexing the occupied West Bank.It's opened land registration for the first time since 1967, when it first occupied the Palestinian territory.
The move means large tracts of Palestinian land could be confiscated and recorded as Israeli “state land”.
Most Palestinian land is not formally registered because it is a long, complicated process that Israel stopped in 1967.
Registration of land establishes permanent ownership.
International law states that an occupying power cannot confiscate land in occupied territories.
Xavier Abu Eid, a political analyst based in Ramallah, said the “land registration” move by Israel is “packing annexation into some sort of bureaucratic move”.
