LUCCA M58 Sunto vs ECM Synchronika: two flagship dual boiler E61 espresso machines go head-to-head. Which one should you buy?

They're both gorgeous, both dual boilers, and both built around the classic E61 group head, so it's no surprise they're two of the most cross-shopped machines in our showroom. If you've been flipping between browser tabs trying to decide, this one's for you. We go line by line through specs, features, warm-up times, included accessories, and design. Spoiler: you really can't go wrong.

WHAT WE COVER

E61 group head and brewing: Both machines use the E61 group head. You get line-pressure pre-infusion when they're plumbed in, compatibility with the LUCCA E61 flow control kit for flow and pressure profiling, programmable pre-infusion that also works on the reservoir, and PID temperature control in single degrees with a built-in shot timer.

Warm-up time: Both have a dedicated group head heating element and a quick heat-up mode. The LUCCA M58 Sunto is ready in about 10 minutes. The ECM Synchronika is ready in about 6.5 minutes.

Boilers: Both have stainless steel boilers and a 0.75L brew boiler. The M58 Sunto has a 1.75L steam boiler and the Synchronika has a 2L steam boiler.

Water supply: Both can run from the internal reservoir or be direct plumbed. Both use a quiet Fluid-o-Tech rotary pump.

Scheduling: The ECM Synchronika has a built-in weekly on/off timer. For the M58 Sunto, you can get the same result with a smart plug.

Size: The footprints are similar. The M58 Sunto is about 2.75" shorter, so it fits under cabinets more easily.

Included kit: The M58 Sunto comes with walnut-handled double-spouted and bottomless portafilters plus a wood-handled tamper. The Synchronika comes with single- and double-spouted portafilters and a stainless steel tamper.

Design: The LUCCA M58 Sunto takes nautical inspiration, with navy gauges and a sweeping cup rail. The ECM Synchronika goes minimal, with polished panels and motorsport-style red-accented gauges.
