On Christmas Day in 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor in Rome. The moment transformed medieval Europe, but their alliance was built on a struggle over who would control the Church and the city of Rome. Its consequences reached far beyond the famous coronation at St. Peter’s Basilica. Why did the pope need a Frankish king to protect him? And what did Charlemagne gain in return? This episode follows the uneasy partnership between the papacy and the Carolingians, from the conquest of the Lombards and the spread of Roman religious practices to the limits that Frankish rulers placed on papal independence. After Charlemagne’s death, popes gained room to act. We examine the Constitutio Romana, forged church documents that helped strengthen appeals to Rome, and the breakup of the Carolingian Empire. Pope Nicholas I then confronted King Lothar II over his attempt to divorce his wife, while Pope John VIII crowned a new emperor and struggled to defend Italy without dependable military support. The papacy was becoming a powerful voice across Latin Christendom, even as its survival depended on rulers beyond Rome.
