The AI Boom Is Colliding With America's Debt Problem. That Is Bullish for Bitcoin.

Is the AI boom bullish for Bitcoin? Cory Klippsten argues yes, and the mechanism has nothing to do with AI agents. It runs through the bond market.

The full argument: the Dallas Fed cites estimates of $3 to $5 trillion for the data center build-out over the next three to five years, and the five biggest hyperscalers have issued roughly $220 billion of bonds this year, according to BNP Paribas data reported by Reuters, up from about $12.5 billion in the same period last year. Washington needs many of the same long-term bond investors: the federal government is running a deficit of roughly $2 trillion a year, debt held by the public is more than $32 trillion, and net federal interest expense is on pace to exceed $1 trillion this fiscal year. Nomura estimates the tech borrowing is equivalent to about a quarter of Treasury's net issuance of notes and bonds to private investors.

Private borrowing has a brake: if rates get high enough, Amazon or Google can slow a project down. Treasury has to refinance as debt comes due. The best argument against the thesis is that AI productivity ultimately overwhelms the financing pressure, and the timing is the problem: the borrowing is happening now, and the payoff, if it comes, shows up over years. If financing costs keep rising while deficits remain this large, the incentive gets stronger to reduce the real cost of the debt: easier policy, more inflation, or financial repression. Bitcoin has a fixed supply and no issuer.
