The tale of the enigmatic giant serpent
A weird rumor circulates on internet forums and podcasts, claiming that a 50-foot serpent hides in Central Africa, ready to strike passing aircraft if disturbed. Probably fake news, like most cryptozoology stories, but nonetheless it is a fantastic narrative. In 1959, a WWII Belgian Air Force Colonel reported spotting a massive greenish-brown snake while helicoptering above Katanga Province in the Belgian-occupied Congo. He claimed to be an expert pilot who could accurately judge the size of ground objects from above. He claimed that when the plane sank within 30 feet, the snake raised its neck by 10 feet and peered at the chopper for a bite. The pilot, a respected Air Force veteran, was trustworthy and had no apparent reason to lie. However, it appears unlikely that this mythological snake resides in the Congo basin.
Mountain Of Gold
Recently, the Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced something straight out of a fantasy or treasure hunt narrative. After a mountain of gold-rich resources was uncovered, the country's authorities were obliged to halt mining in one village. Locals were seen excavating the earth using shovels and other instruments to collect gold from the soil. Some were spotted using only their hands. They dug the soil inside the gold deposits and transported what they could back to their dwellings to clean it and extract the gold. Because a powerful armed gang controlled the valuable gold mines in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, these villagers were seeking to profit from their find, before the mountain was taken over by the group.
