Japan needed a decisive victory. Russia needed to stop retreating. At Mukden in 1905, more than 600,000 men faced a battle that would expose the devastating power of modern warfare. In this episode of our Russo-Japanese War series, we follow the Battle of Mukden from its opening deception to the collapse of the Russian defensive line. General Aleksey Kuropatkin built his position around three armies, powerful artillery and a defensive front. Marshal Oyama Iwao planned to draw Russian reserves east while General Nogi Maresuke swept around the western flank. As Japanese infantry attacked entrenched positions and heavy guns pinned Russian troops in place, the danger shifted behind Kuropatkin’s lines. Failed counterattacks, confused orders and threatened escape routes turned a planned withdrawal into a retreat. Yet Japan’s exhausted army faced its own limits, and victory came at a terrible cost. Discover how Oyama’s deception worked, why Russian numerical advantages failed to secure victory, and how the fighting around Mukden foreshadowed the battlefields of World War One. With the fall of Port Arthur behind them and Tsushima still ahead, both empires were approaching the final reckoning of a war that transformed the balance of power in East Asia and shook imperial Russia.
