War in Sudan: Why a Nation Is Falling Apart - An online discussion by DW Documentary

Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a brutal civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces under Mohammed Hamdan Daglo. The toll has been devastating: over 150,000 people have died in the fighting, more than 500,000 children have succumbed to malnutrition, and around 15 million people have been displaced—either within Sudan or as refugees abroad. Despite the scale of the crisis, the war has received little international attention.

The humanitarian crisis is dire, yet global attention remains limited. Aid organizations on the ground are doing their best to ease the suffering, but hospitals are overwhelmed by the sheer number of injured and ill. And many hospitals were attacked and destroyed in the conflict.

To shed light on the situation, DW Documentary commissioned the coproduction ‘A Hospital in the Shadow of War’ (DW & ZDF for ARTE) released in June 2025: https://youtu.be/lb9WYCR3Z4s. This powerful film highlights the struggles of a hospital in the Nuba Mountains in southern Suda and the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.

But what lies behind this devastating conflict? How did a country shortly brimming with hope for democratic change—after decades of dictatorship under Omar al-Bashir and his overthrow in 2019—descend into civil war? What are the goals of the opposing factions? What role does the Darfur region, the site of violent conflict since 2003 and recent horrific massacres, play in the crisis? Moreover, what interests do foreign powers like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, and Egypt have in this conflict? What is the current situation on the ground, and is there any hope for peace and democratic progress? Or does the country face further escalation and possible collapse?

To deepen the conversation, join us for the live online panel discussion ‘War in Sudan: Why a Nation Is Falling Apart’ on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 18:00 (UTC+2). Panelists include Carl Gierstorfer and Laura Salm-Reifferscheidt, filmmakers of A Hospital in the Shadow of War, Naba Mohiedeen, Sudanese journalist, Kholood Khair, founder and director of the Sudanese think tank Confluence Advisory, Kyle McNally, Doctors Without Borders, and Hajooj Kuka, Sudanese NGO Emergency Response Room.
