No Bad Emotions: How to Truly Smile | Shinichiro Matsuguma, Ph.D | TEDxMakati
Why would a Japanese psychologist teach positive psychology in the Philippines — a country known for its smiles and resilience? When Shinichiro Matsuguma, Ph.D., began teaching at the University of the Philippines Diliman, he quietly wrestled with a question: Why here?
In a culture where people often smile even through hardship, the true meaning of his work felt uncertain — until the honest reflections of his students revealed something deeper behind a culture often seen as “happy.”
What does it take to smile from the heart?
In this talk, Dr. Matsuguma reveals why understanding the value of negative emotions is essential to truly thrive — especially in societies where positivity is expected Dr. Shinichiro Matsuguma's revolutionary approach to positive psychology was born from a profound cultural exchange. When the Japanese psychologist first arrived in Tacloban after Super Typhoon Yolanda, he carried textbook theories of trauma recovery - but the Filipino survivors taught him something more valuable: the culturally-rooted resilience of bayanihan (community unity), tibay ng loob (inner strength), and innate optimism that defied Western psychological models.
This cultural awakening led him to pioneer a new approach during his Ph.D. at Keio University - developing psychological frameworks that honor local wisdom alongside clinical research. Now teaching at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Dr. Matsuguma dedicates his work to decolonizing positive psychology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
