In 1381, England’s social order came close to collapse. Decades after the Black Death killed up to 60 percent of the population, surviving workers demanded higher wages and freedom. Parliament answered with wage caps, sumptuary laws, and punishing taxes to fund the Hundred Years’ War. This video follows the explosive Peasants’ Revolt from its origins in plague, serfdom, and royal debt to the moment ordinary people seized London. When agents of the crown tried to enforce a third poll tax, resistance in Essex and Kent became a mass uprising. Led by the charismatic Wat Tyler and inspired by the radical preacher John Ball, tens of thousands marched on the capital, broke open prisons, destroyed John of Gaunt’s Savoy Palace, and stormed the Tower of London. With England’s armies away and only a few hundred soldiers at his side, the 14-year-old Richard II faced the rebels himself. He promised freedom, the abolition of serfdom, and sweeping reforms. Then Wat Tyler was cut down at Smithfield, and the king took his revenge. Discover how the greatest popular uprising in medieval English history was crushed, why Richard betrayed his promises, and how the rebels nevertheless helped bring England’s feudal age to an end.
