Philippines' Army Chief On Buying Indian Helicopters, Aircraft, Submarines | Raisina 2026 | N18G

General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, spoke with Anmol Singla of Firstpost on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue 2026 in New Delhi about rising tensions in the South China Sea, defence cooperation with India and the broader security situation in the Indo-Pacific. Brawner said the Philippines continues to face aggressive actions from China in the South China Sea, including incidents involving Chinese Coast Guard vessels targeting Filipino fishermen and naval ships operating within Manila’s exclusive economic zone. He described Beijing’s actions as part of an expansionist agenda tied to its controversial nine-dash line claim over much of the South China Sea. To counter these challenges, Brawner said the Philippines has strengthened cooperation with allies and partners, including the United States, Japan, Australia and India through joint freedom-of-navigation operations and defence partnerships. Speaking about India–Philippines defence ties, Brawner welcomed expanding cooperation following Manila’s acquisition of the BrahMos missile system. He said the Philippines is exploring further defence purchases from India, including helicopters, aircraft and submarines, as Manila works to modernise its military capabilities.
