India's Tech Poster Child Sridhar Vembu of Zoho Faces Reality Check, Flak Over Grim Outlook |Vantage
Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu, often hailed as a poster child for India's homegrown technology industry and nation-building, is facing criticism over his call for Indian-origin engineers and entrepreneurs in the United States to return home and build India.Vembu has doubled down on his appeal, arguing that “there are a million things to build in India”. But his message has sparked questions after Zoho announced that it would skip annual performance appraisals and salary hikes this year as the software company attempts to avoid mass layoffs.
Vembu has also warned of an uncertain software job market as artificial intelligence (AI) drives up costs. The decision has fuelled wider fears about AI's impact on employment, the future of software jobs and the financial pressures facing technology companies.
