Jeff Ruland's Best Game with the 76ers (Hits First Seven Shots)
January 14, 1987 - This is the last time we ever saw a semi-healthy Jeff Ruland on the NBA stage. A two-time all-star who finished ninth in MVP voting as a member of the Washington Bullets in 1984, Ruland's body began to fail him during the 1985 season, beginning with shoulder trouble before knee pain resulted in a deluge of knee operations. At a time when there was still hope that he might make a full recovery, Ruland was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers during the summer of 1986 in exchange for Moses Malone. Alas, after reaggravating his knee injury during the preseason, Ruland lasted just two regular season games for Philadelphia before being shut down.
The highlights above come from his first return to action in over two months. In just 24 minutes of action, Ruland finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks in helping propel the 76ers to a 96-93 win over the Atlanta Hawks.
Alas, Ruland's brutish coalition with Sixers teammate Charles Barkley was doomed to be short-lived. Ruland's knee issues reemerged less than a week later, leading not only to the end of his season, but his career altogether. Ruland announced his premature retirement from the NBA in June of '86 (though it should be noted that Ruland returned to appear in 25 games in the early '90s).
