Gianfranco Fini ha analizzato la complessa realtà iraniana, sottolineando che dal 1979 a oggi l’Iran non ha mai vissuto un vero momento formativo se non quello dell’Islam sciita, definito da lui come una versione più “medievale” della religione. Fini ha spiegato che un popolo che per 46 anni è stato formato sotto un regime oppressivo difficilmente potrà avere un’autorità civile distinta e distante dall’Islam. Sull’eventuale cambio di regime, Fini si è mostrato scettico: “Non credo nel cambio di regime”, auspicando però che l’attuale guida suprema, Khamenei, possa essere solo pensionato e non ucciso. Ha aggiunto che l’Iran, con una storia millenaria di oltre 3000 anni, è profondamente orgoglioso della propria identità e non vede probabile una rivolta popolare contro la leadership attuale. Secondo Fini, è più realistico aspettarsi l’emergere di una nuova classe dirigente di transizione più moderata, anche se l’assetto post-Khamenei resta ancora incerto.
