Imagine entering the job you have wanted for decades, and two years in, the entire world changes. How would it affect you? How would you create an effect in return? In 2020 Dr. Joe Thomas was still a novice independent hospitalist physician when he was forced to become a leader in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, but also the escalating parallel pandemic of misinformation. In this talk, he discusses incorporating science communication into his life outside of patient care, the emotional toll both pandemics have taken on him, and his humanistic approach to connection and education both in person and through TikTok. He finishes with tools everyone can use to sift through and push back against misinformation. Joseph S. Thomas, MD, FHM is a hospitalist physician and science communicator working with patients in Buffalo, NY and serving as a clinical instructor to medical residents and students. He also serves as one of the Digital Media Editors for the Journal of Hospital Medicine. He writes at the blog Managing Health Expectations and on Substack, has guested on multiple podcasts, and uses social media to create educational videos and fight misinformation, especially about public health.
