Siamo nel 2019. Baum Hedlund Aristei & Goldman, uno studio che rappresenta migliaia di vittime di presunti tumori da Roundup - erbicida sviluppato dalla Monsanto Company - porta in tribunale l'azienda. Nel mirino c'è il principio attivo del Roundup, il glifosato, che nel 2015 viene classificato dall'IARC (Agenzia Internazionale per la Ricerca sul Cancro) come "probabilmente cancerogeno per l'uomo". La Monsanto non prende bene queste accuse, e si organizza per replicare. Come? "Correggendo l'informazione". E' quello che è emerso successivamente a una deposizione di Sam Murphey, all'epoca direttore delle relazioni con i media globali.
Piccolo inciso: Trump ha firmato solo pochi giorni fa un ordine esecutivo, invocando il Defense Production Act. Il fosforo elementare e glifosato sono per gli USA fondamentali "per la sicurezza nazionale". Trump non salva le cause contro la Monsanto, ma di fatto applica una forte protezione nei confronti di future produzioni. Una notizia non digerita dall'ambiente MAHA (Make America Healthy Again), di Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
La strategia difensiva della Monsanto fu multimilionaria. Lo riportò U.S. Right to Know, un'organizzazione no-profit statunitense.
Dal punto di vista dell'azienda, era legittimo contrastare "informazioni inaccurate" sul suo prodotto tramite una piccola spesa: circa 17 milioni di dollari. "Abbiamo dovuto investire una notevole quantità di risorse - disse in testimonianza Sam Murphey - nel corso di diversi anni, per correggere la disinformazione e rispondere alle domande del pubblico sul glifosato".
