Informasi ini ia dapatkan dari stafnya yang dikirim untuk memantau aktivitas area yang kemudian diketahui sebagai markas PKI, tempat para jenderal disekap dan dibunuh.
Ia menerima laporan dari timnya mengenai adanya latihan tari Genjer-Genjer oleh masyarakat di sekitar lokasi. Tari ini dikenal sebagai propaganda PKI.
Walaupun tim berita ABRI sudah melaporkan adanya gerak-gerik janggal, informasi tersebut tidak ditanggapi secara serius oleh para petinggi militer yang kemudian menjadi korban.
Brigjen Soegandhi, salah satu tokoh yang peduli, sempat menawarkan penambahan pasukan pengamanan, tetapi tawaran itu ditolak oleh Jenderal Ahmad Yani.
