Gennady Gerasimov explains the Soviet path to market freedom 1990

Moscow: This afternoon, Gennady Gerasimov, spokesman for the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained to reporters that the Soviet path to free markets will involve gradually controlling the intermediate steps beyond the current state planning. The presidential council, composed of 15 advisors chosen by President Mikhail Gorbachev, met for the first time on March 27. At the end of that meeting, Gorbachev himself announced that significant economic measures would be taken, which he deemed necessary even if not fully understood, if they should be accepted. One of the main consequences of the measures adopted today will be a doubling of food prices. Next Thursday, the Soviet Parliament will hold an emergency debate on the decisions agreed upon today. At the Kremlin, Mikhail Gorbachev met for almost half an hour with the presidents of Estonia and Latvia, Arnold Rukhtel and Anatoly Gorbunov. At the end of his interview, Gorbunov stated that positions had not changed and that the conversation had not been pleasant for either side.
